Chapter 31

Seeing In the Dark

Following the elephant-beast’s backtrail was easy. In her panic, she smashed her way through everything in her path, which left plenty of signs to follow. Her tree-trunk legs left flattened bushes, her powerful tusks left gouges in the trees, and here and there was some dried blood from her wound scraped away by dense undergrowth.

It was starting to get properly dark in the forest, but we didn’t need to stop. Both Parker and I had the Beast Hunter passive to enhance our senses, including night vision, and both the gnathabelodon and my companions had natural senses sharp enough to traverse the darkened forest as well.

The forest here was sparser than in other places I’d been. Differently sized trees put big gaps in the forest canopy, leading to more undergrowth, and where there weren’t bushes or brush, there was a carpet of soft moss over most of the ground. Even if tracking this trail wasn’t trivial already, the giant elephant footprints in the moss would have let me follow it blindfolded.

We’d arranged our marching order in what seemed like the most reasonable one for our respective abilities. I took the front in order to try to keep everyone convinced that I was a master tracker. I sent Gothra out ahead to scout, since she was fast, could fly, and had a similar detection radius to mine thanks to her latest achievement. I had Noach and Wowser watch over the gnathabelodon, walking alongside her as she followed. She gave me plenty of lead ahead, to make sure that if danger did appear, I would be front-and-center for it.

Parker stuck close to me. In places where the foliage got dense, or where the trail turned sharply and cut off a direct view to our friends behind us, there were long moments where it was effectively just the two of us, walking through the forest alone together. A gibbous moon shone through the broken canopy here and there, though with the power of Beast Hunter, the starlight of familiar constellations was enough light to see by.

“So what’s your plan when all this is over?” I asked. “Are you going to set up in Townsville to help them recover?”

“When ‘all this is over?’” Parker asked with a snort. “You’re that sure everything is going to work out?”

“I have to be,” I said firmly. “There are human lives on the line here. I’m not talking about taking a delivery or stocking shelves or making change here.” I gestured around myself, trying to indicate the whole planet in a single swing of my hands. “This is the apocalypse, Parker! Our choices are between extinction and doing whatever it takes.”

“Easy there, Dolittle,” Parker said with a smirk. “You don’t have to convince me there. I just… I guess I admire your confidence.”

“The apocalypse zapped all my cheevos,” I said, returning the smirk.
